Pt 1 Above Ground Pool Problems

Q. The ground has shifted under my above ground pool and

…the pool is tilted, I am afraid it might burst

A. What to do…

As the famous line says. Be afraid, be very afraid.   Empty your pool immediately. The weight  of thousands of gallons of water supported are meant to be supported vertically. When a pool tilts, suddenly thousands of pounds of water pressure are pushing the pool in a direction it was not designed to support. Relieve the pressure immediately and start over, making sure the ground is compacted completely first.

Pinhole Rust Spots On Above Ground Pools

Q. After 15 years I  had little holes appear about a foot off the ground on my steel walled pool

and it is leaking all over the pool at that height. I have a sand base.

A. What Happened?

Here is what happen.  When you originally put sand in the pool, the light pebbles floated up in the air and landed on the wall.  The  sand pebbles over time pierced your liner from the pressure of water against the liner and water flowed out in small amounts and rusted the steel wall right at the small diameter hole.  The pH. in water tilted too low causing acidity  conditions and rusted out your wall. You will need a new liner a new wall and remove the sand and add comfy bottom instead.  That will solve your problem.

Pt 2 Above Ground Pool Problems

Above ground pool smell after draining?

I drained my 48″ Intex above ground pool. The pool has an awful
“sewer” smell. Can anyone recommend a cleaner that would work to remove this smell. I don’t want to store it all winter until I get this problem resolved.

A. What to do.

Mix a Gallon of warm water with 1/3 cup of bleach and wash the entire pool (including the bottom, the smell may be coming from a 3 month heat induced relationship the bottom of your pool had with the grass and ground

Gopher Chewed Above Ground Pools I have lost two liners to gophers

I live in a densely populated gopher area and the little beasties burrow under my pool and then up.  I don’t know if they chew the liner, or if the liner just stretches into their holes and pops.  What do I do?

A. What to do.

Gophers, voles, mice, ground squirrels and other varieties of burrowing varmints can cause a lot of problems. If you live in a varmint zone we suggest laying down a sandwich of chicken wire, Comfy Bottom, wire screen and a layer of Comfy Bottom on top. This will both keep the critters from reaching your liner, and keep your liner from stretching into their holes.

Q. Can I stop my above ground pool from collapsing or at least limit the damage?

I just checked my pool and the pillow has popped and the snow/ice build up was bringing some of the sides in. I released the cover to help with the pressure. The water inside is frozen. One panel wall is bent alittle and the liner is out, another panel has released itself from the top rail, it’s about two panels down from the first one. Is there anything I can do to save it from collapsing before I can get a pool guy out? Thanks.

A. What to do..

For future reference try something more solid than an air pillow in extreme cold conditions. An Inner tube or even a solid tire. We’ve had customers in Canada use a log of all things, reporting it keeps the cover afloat and it will more lightly compress when the water freezes.

Now, for what to do, if the pool is frozen solid,  don’t worry, it won’t get any worse. Disassemble the pool piece by piece

If it is not frozen solid, wrap the pool with rope several times to hold everything together until your pool guy comes
